Areas of the country that have high "spark spreads" (the difference between grid electric pricing and gas fired DE electric cost), installed natural gas distribution and strong government incentives such as the northeast US and California currently offer the greatest potential for CHP. CHP solutions offer opportunities for relatively high ROI (20% +) and rapid payback (2 - 4 years), as well as increased sustainability and energy independence.

Other areas of the country, such as the mid-Atlantic and upper mid-west are not yet providing such aggressive incentives. Efficiency in distributed CHP is created by utilizing thermal loads at the customer site in addition to the electric generation by capturing and using the released heat, which can raise efficiencies to 80% to 90%.
