Efficiency in distributed CHP is created by utilizing thermal loads at the customer site in addition to the electric generation by capturing and using the released heat, which can raise efficiencies to 80% to 90%. The economic benefits from thermal load efficiencies may come from either reduced electric demand (where electricity is used to power heating or cooling) or from reduced or replaced consumption of natural gas, either of which create cost savings in addition to those realized in electric replacement.
Cost savings are generated by replacing grid sourced electric with natural gas, biogas or propane fuel costs, as well as, replacing the use of higher cost liquid fuels (diesel and HFO) for thermal generation by utilizing the thermal output of the CHP plant engine-generator(s).
